Services and Function
The purpose of the Portage County Survey Department is to process the documents that affect land boundary location so land interest can be identified, listed, mapped, assessed, and taxed; to preserve and maintain the Public Land Survey System (PLSS) and the records thereof, and provide technical and/or professional assistance to the public concerning issues related to land ownership or location.
The County Surveyor’s office is also responsible for carrying out statutory duties to preserve and maintain the PLSS by remonumenting the corner monuments that were set to mark and establish the limits and extents thereof. Portage County has completed the remonumentation of it’s government corners and is in the process of establishing county coordinates on all government corners which are referenced to NAD 83/91. Sixteen 1st and 2nd order stations through out the county are used as the primary control points. These are first order monuments. All corners have survey control monuments certificates (tie sheets) and are on record in the surveyors office. As survey grade accuracy is established on government corners a notation of "PCCS" (Portage County Coordinate System) is affixed to this corner.
